What is the basis for the man-hour allocations norms?

The man-hours used should be considered as ‘norms’ as they are intended to apply in optimum workshop circumstances.   
The man-hours nominated should be reviewed and modified as necessary considering a range of environmental and / or productivity factors.   
Accordingly the man-hours nominated should not be taken as absolute or definitive but serve as a baseline.

What is the purpose of factoring the man-hour baseline?

Accepted Answer

Examples of potential factors could be, but not limited to location, staff experience, workshop tools and facilities, labour productivity, safety restriction, etc..   
The intent is to provide a static point of reference from which our users can establish consistent and confident projections of man-hour requirements for spool fabrication.

Our manhour database contains in excess of 250,000 individual manhour rates based on our many years of research.   
While it is not practical to continuously measure or track the potential variability of each man-hour rate, the measurement and tracking of factors affecting the overall man-hour allocation can be readily achieved.   
This will allow increasing levels of confident man-hour projection over time and build benchmark information.

What scope of work do the man-hours cover?

Accepted Answer

The data that will be populated includes:
 • Handling of pipe, fittings and flanges into the workshop.
 • If fittings are butt welded then rates for cut and bevel are applied to each section of pipe.
 • If fittings are socket welded then rates for cut only are applied.
 • All relevant connections such as butt welds, socket weld, slip on flange welds and  where appropriate.
 • Preheat and stress relieve where appropriate , eg. Wall thickness above 19mm.
 • Handling of the finished spool to a laydown yard.
 • Passivating for stainless steel.

What activities are excluded from the man-hour calculations?

Accepted Answer

The data allocated does not include any indirect activity such as:
• weld mapping
• non destructive testing
• hydrotesting
• production of as builds, etc .
